।। Shri ।।
Greetings,
Once again, I greet each one of you on a new Sunday and assure you that today also I am going to tell you something wonderful. Last week, we saw a few verses from the Dasbodh Granth about chanting God’s name. Today, let us take a different topic.
Once again, heartfelt thanks to everyone. Thank you for reading the letter, thank you for giving feedback after reading it, thank you for telling a few more people, “Please read this,” and thank you sincerely for giving me your time. Today, let us see a beautiful story about a mother. Let’s go!
Every Sunday Evening
Sunday is a holiday, so there are always some plans made. But for the last few months, I have had only one plan every Sunday night at 8 PM — talking with small children.
Through a Zoom Meeting, I talk with small children and we have a lot of fun. Fun means stories, poems, games, songs, movies, short films, documentaries, habit trackers… what all do we not do in those 40 minutes!
If you also want to experience this, then definitely join the call on Sunday night at 8 PM. Joining the call itself is the only fee for that call. Nothing else.
So, last week, Sunday the 10th and Mother’s Day came on the same day. I thought, come on, today let us tell children everything we know about mothers.
I was searching for stories throughout the week. “Mother” is such a topic that there is no shortage of stories on it. But while thinking, “Which one should I tell?” I stopped at one story. It is a very beautiful story. You may have heard it before, but it is the kind of story that should go deep into the mind once again and stay remembered forever.
The story that I am going to tell today is called — “Dinu’s Bill.” This story was written by the famous writer Acharya Atre. This is one of the special short stories in Marathi. I have also heard that this story was earlier included in school textbooks. If you have read it, then definitely let me know in the comments.
Dinu’s Bill
Dinu’s father was a doctor. Sometimes Dinu used to go to the clinic with him. Many people used to come there — some for checkups, some for medicines. Someone would say, “Doctor, my stomach hurts, please give medicine,” while someone else would ask, “Doctor, how much is the bill?”
Dinu used to sit on a small chair and listen to all this. He had started understanding many things in the clinic, but he did not understand what “bill” meant.
One day Dinu asked his father, “Father, what is a bill?”
The doctor took a paper from the table, showed it to Dinu, and said, “Look, this is called a bill. Read it.”
Dinu started reading the paper. It was written on it —
For checking the patient — 10 rupees
For coming home two times — 20 rupees
For giving medicine eight times — 8 rupees
Total — 38 rupees
Dinu kept reading the bill for a long time. Suddenly he smiled. Some thought came into his mind.
After going home, Dinu took a paper and prepared a bill in his mother’s name. On it he wrote —
For bringing flowers from the garden today — 50 paise
For taking care of the baby for two hours — 2 rupees
For giving a message to the neighbour aunty — 1 rupee
For bringing sugar from the shop — 50 paise
Total — 4 rupees
Dinu took this bill and kept it in his mother’s room.
The next morning, Dinu woke up early. Near his pillow, 4 rupees were kept. He took the money and along with it, he also saw a paper.
He picked up the paper and started reading it. That paper was a bill prepared by his mother in Dinu’s name.
The mother had written —
For raising you from childhood till now — nothing
For staying awake day and night and taking care of you during sickness four times — nothing
For entertaining you by telling stories — nothing
For teaching you how to read — nothing
Total — nothing
Tears came into Dinu’s eyes. The paper fell from his hands and taking that money, he went crying to his mother.
Without saying anything, he returned the money to his mother and kept his head on her lap and started crying.
The mother lovingly touched Dinu, kissed him, and said,
“I have received the payment for your bill, dear Dinu!”
Getting Lost in the Story
After many years, this happened to me — while reading and listening to a story, I became so involved in it that I did not even realize when tears came into my eyes. The same happened with this story.
Truly, nobody can calculate the things a mother does for us.
Out of all the stories about mothers that I know, this is the story I liked the most. Please definitely tell me how you liked it.
Tell this story to everyone you know and think once yourself — truly, if our parents made a bill for everything they have done for us, then what would the total amount be? And is there any way to repay it?
Even if you do not know the way, it is okay. Just being with them is also enough.
Let us meet next Sunday with another new story. Till then, stay healthy, stay happy, and stay busy making your parents happy by spending time with them.
Thank you.
